Sauteed Green Beans with Onions

Warm Green Beans Sauteed with Onions, cayenne pepper, and extra virgin olive oil until they are tender and crispy makes a healthy and flavorful side dish every time.

Thanksgiving is next week and no doubt it will feel different this year but we will make the best of it, and on the menu, we always serve a side of our delicious sauteed green beans with onions.

A perfect side dish and one everyone will enjoy.

These green beans are delightful for vegetarians and vegan lovers!  Dairy-free, gluten-free, and cooked in one skillet, plus – reheating is never a problem.

As always, the flavor is so amazing and a little addicting, my family requests these green beans every year.

Why we love green beans…

  • Green beans provide enough Vitamins C, Vitamin A, and Vitamin K in just one cup as part of your daily allowance.  They are a great source of nutrients and benefits, including a good source of dietary fiber.

Green Beans or String Beans…

As sisters, we had a discussion over whether to call them green beans or string beans.  So we googled to find out, and we found out they are one and the same!

So, whatever your preference is to call them, enjoy this vitamin-rich vegetable and this recipe.

It happens to be one of our favorite side dishes because you can make it a day in advance, then reheat the next day before serving.

And, that helps tremendously when cooking for Thanksgiving… right?!

And, you probably noticed we love adding cayenne pepper into our foods; it also benefits the metabolism, helping to give it a healthy boost.

Our mom always said cayenne pepper wakes up the flavors in every dish.

It’s another great way to get your family to eat more “healthy greens,” and one we think they will enjoy.

Ingredients Needed for Sautรฉed Green Beans with Onions:

  • 1 pound of fresh string beans – washed, ends clipped and discarded
  • 1/2  large onion – chopped
  • 1/4 cup of extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/8 tsp. organic cayenne pepper
  • salt, pepper, and garlic powder to taste

1.  In a large skillet,  and on moderate heat, heat extra virgin olive oil and add the onions.  Sautรฉ the onions until golden color, about 5 to 10 minutes.  Stirring often, you don’t want the onions to burn.

2.  Add string beans (while still wet).

3.  Add cayenne pepper.   Then cover the pan and lower the heat to simmer.   This will also steam the beans while simmering.

4.   Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.  Add salt, fresh cracked pepper, and garlic powder to taste.  Taste the beans for tenderness, then remove and transfer to a bowl and serve.

Serves 4

Make Ahead and Reheat…

  • To Make Ahead? It’s best to “undercook” the beans a little, and to a very al-dente bite. Simply because the longer they sit in a warm skillet, or waiting to cool down, the green beans will continue “to cook.” Then you will end up with over-cooked, mushy beans.
  • To Reheat: You can reheat these beans easily in the same skillet, or microwave them in a safe microwave bowl, for a minute or two, until they are warm. Or reheat in a preheated oven, for a few minutes, until they’re warm enough to serve.

Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of fresh string beans - washed, ends clipped and discarded

  • 1/8 tsp. organic cayenne pepper

  1. Heat olive oil in a large non-stick skillet and on moderate heat. Add the onions and sauté, stirring often, until they are golden, and caramelized about 5 to 8 minutes.
  2. Add string beans (while still wet).
  3. Add cayenne pepper. Cover the pan and lower the heat to simmer. This will also steam the beans while simmering.
  4. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. Add salt, fresh cracked pepper, and garlic powder to taste.
  6. Taste the beans for tenderness, then remove and transfer to a bowl. Serve.

  1. hello, this recipe looks absolutely wonderful. Can I make this a few hours ahead of time? If so, should they be refrigerated and what are the instructions on reheating them?

    1. Hi Christine! Welcome to our recipe blog, it is so nice to meet you! To answer your question, yes! You can make it ahead a few hours before serving. But under cook them a little, because the longer the beans sit (after sautรฉed) in a warm skillet, or even if they are set aside to cool down in a serving dish, they will continue to cook, and you don’t want to end up with overcooked or mushy beans. I will go back in and add these instructions, thanks so much! ๐Ÿ™‚
