Frozen Grasshopper

Frozen Grasshopper is a delicious minty milkshake that comes in a beautiful green color, topped with whipped cream and crushed thin mint candies. This frozen treat is perfect for those who want to indulge in something sweet and guilt-free, as it is high in protein and low in sugar and fat. However, it’s a boozy adult-only cocktail made with a mint-flavored liqueur.

The Grasshopper

The Grasshopper was created in 1918 in New Orleans, Louisiana as an after-dinner drink. It was named Grasshopper after its lovely green color. Its popular name is now found in chains like Baskin-Robbins Ice Cream and Dunkin Donuts.

But at home, we enjoy it as a “frozen cocktail.” And, this one is cocktail made with frozen yogurt, crรจme de menthe, and crรจme de cacao liqueurs. Then it is topped with whipped cream, crushed thin mint candies, and green sugar sprinkles.

If you are planning to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, this green-colored frozen cocktail is simple to make and scrumptious too! A sweet treat for a delicious after-dinner dessert! And if you like mint-flavored treats, don’t miss our Easy Peppermint Tiramisu and Mint Chocolate Chip Zucchini Brownies.

A Frozen Grasshopper…

Traditionally, frozen grasshoppers are usually made with ice cream. But this one is made with frozen yogurt. Frozen yogurt contains one-fourth of sugar, fat, calories, and even cholesterol. Plus, it contains zero saturated fat and zero trans fat, and double the amount of protein per serving.

“This frozen treat is already appealing, but there is something that makes it even more irresistible!”

The liqueurs in this frozen cocktail…

This frozen grasshopper is made with 2 kinds of liqueurs, creme de menthe and creme de cacao. The crรจme de menthe is a very sweet minty-flavored liqueur and crรจme de cacao is a clear alcoholic, (chocolate bean) liqueur that is sweet-tasting with a hint of vanilla. Both are commonly used in local bars and restaurants and served as popular cocktail coffee drinks and martinis.

Tips and Notes:

  • It’s important to note that crรจme de menthe and crรจme de cacao contain 50% alcohol by volume, which does not cook out. Therefore, this recipe is not suitable for children.
  • For a non-alcoholic version of Frozen Grasshopper, skip the mint and chocolate liqueurs.  You can substitute with 1/2 teaspoon of pure peppermint extract and 1/4 to 1/2 cup of milk.
  • It is BEST to consume this frozen cocktail minutes after you make it. If you have any leftovers, you can pop them back into the freezer, and have them later.
  • It’s best to chill your stainless steel martini cocktail shaker for at least one hour before creating your frozen cocktails.

  1. I came across this looking at your cannoli dip! Not for St. Patrickโ€™s day, but my husband loves anything minty and itโ€™s his birthday next week. Thanks!

    1. I switched over to yogurt a few years ago when I noticed the considerable difference between ice cream and frozen yogurt. And the taste is delicious – cannot tell them apart. Hope you'll try this one! Have a great day !
