Lemon Sorbet with Vodka (Sgroppino)

Lemon Sorbet with Vodka, known as Sgroppino in Italy, is made with only 5 ingredients. It’s a popular after-dinner frozen cocktail served in Italy. And, it’s refreshing and perfect for enjoying all summer long.

Lemon Sorbet with Vodak (Sgroppino)

In Italy, this Lemon Sorbet with Vodka, aka Sgroppino, is pronounced as “Skro-pee-no” and it is consumed primarily as a digestive cocktail served after dinner.

And, it is a delicious frozen treat! Cool, refreshing lemon flavor with a smooth creamy texture, similar to a softened lemon mousse.

Unlike an “aperitivo” which is an Italian pre-meal drink; like our Aperol Spritz Recipe or Limoncello Spritz. The word “aperitivo” is derived from the Latin word, “aperire” which means โ€œto openโ€ the stomach before dining.

This Sgroppino is a trendy after-dinner cocktail to help digest your food, and it is usually served in upscale restaurants In Italy.

But today, we will show you how easy to make this after-dinner cocktail at home in your kitchen.

How To Make This After-Dinner Cocktail: Sgroppino?

This digestive cocktail takes 5 minutes to make it. It’s best to have your alcohol chilled and some lemon sorbet or granita in your freezer. And the rest is easy!

What You Will Need…

  1. Lemon Sorbet or Lemon Granita – already frozen in your freezer.
  2. Vodka – best to have it chilled beforehand.
  3. Prosecco – it’s OK if you don’t have it already chilled (see our notes below).
  4. Lemon Slices – are needed to garnish the glasses.
  5. Fresh Mint – is always the perfect addition to this frozen cocktail.
  6. Four Fluted Glasses – you will need small fluted glasses (6 ounces) with long small spoons are preferred.
  7. A Blender – we like to use our Black+Decker Blender, or a bar cocktail shaker.

Before you make it: Tips for Success…

  • It’s a good idea to chill your alcohol beforehand.
  • When serving this Italian after-dinner cocktail, it is best to serve and consume it as soon as you make it.
  • Check the mixture, once you blend it. If you need to add additional sorbet to the mixture? Go ahead and add additional sorbet. The mixture should be pourable, but not watery.
  • If you wait too long, the alcohol and sorbet with start to separate and divide inside the glass, leaving the sorbet on top and alcohol on the bottom, and losing some of its flavor.
  • Always garnish each glass with a slice of lemon and fresh mint on top for a beautiful and elegant presentation.

How To Make It?

Let’s go over our simple steps to making this refreshing cocktail, Sgroppino.

  1. Open the tub of frozen lemon sorbet or granita. Scoop about 2 cups and transfer to your blender, or into a mixing bowl.
  2. Measure the alcohol, and pour it into the blender or mixing bowl.
  3. Blend the mixture on low speed for less than a minute to combine. NOTE: if you’re using a mixing bowl, you can blend with a whisk, or with a hand-held immersion blender.
  4. Pour evenly into 4 fluted glasses. Add a lemon slice, fresh mint leaf, and a spoon. And, serve immediately.

FAQ’s…

  1. Where Can We Buy Lemon Sorbet or Lemon Granita? You can easily find them in your freezer section at your local supermarket. Or you can get a tub at a local ice cream shop that sells sorbets and granitas.
  2. Do We Taste the Vodka in This Frozen Cocktail? Hardly, but you can adjust the amount to your liking.
  3. Can We Omit The Prosecco? Yes, you can, and only use Vodka. And, 3 ounces is still enough.
  4. Can We Make This Cocktail Ahead? Yes, you can, but keep it in your freezer until you are ready to serve it.
  5. How To Store It? Make the frozen cocktail, pour it into a tall plastic bottle, and freeze it. Then allow it to thaw a minute or more, shake the bottle vigorously, and pour it into your flute glasses and serve.
  6. Can We Make Other Flavors? Yes, and in Italy, they make this after-dinner cocktail in different flavors: orange and mandarine.
  7. Can We Make it Non-Alcoholic? Yes, absolutely! And, especially if you want to serve it to children. Make it with only lemon sorbet (or lemon granita) some fresh lemon juice, and blend it until it is creamy-smooth. Then pour it into plastic or paper cups for the kids. Don’t forget to add a small spoon for them too.

Ingredients

  • 2 or (2.5) cups frozen lemon sorbet (or granita)
  • 3 ounces (100ml) of chilled Vodka
  • 1 ounce (30ml) of chilled Prosecco
  • 4 slices of lemon
  • fresh mint

Instructions

  1. First, remove your frozen lemon sorbet from your freezer.
  2. Next, measure the lemon sorbet and add it to your blender. Then pour in the vodka and prosecco.
  3. Blend for a few seconds until creamy and smooth. Pour the lemon mixture into 4 fluted glasses, and place a tall spoon inside the glass.
  4. Garnish with a fresh lemon slice and a mint leaf.
  5. Serve immediately.
