Easy Orange Posset
Orange Posset is a simple, silky-smooth, and delicious English dessert with a delightful orange flavor. It is a combination of pudding and custard, and it’s made with just four ingredients. This dessert is an ideal option for dinner parties when time is of the essence.

A No-Bake, Easy Orange Posset Dessert
I came across a recipe for an English posset while searching for a no-bake, easy dessert. I found a simple lemon posset recipe in Modern Comfort Food by Ina Garten and decided to make it for my dinner party.
Unfortunately, it turned out to be much too sweet for my taste, and most of my guests felt the same way.
The next day, I decided to redo the recipe, modifying it to my taste, this time using oranges instead of lemons because I had a ton of oranges. And, I can proudly say… it turned out to be a 10!
A Perfect Dessert For Entertaining
An Orange Posset is the perfect dessert for entertaining at a dinner party. Best of all, it can be made up to two days in advance. It’s not overly sweet, and the orange flavor pairs beautifully with a creamy smooth texture.
How to Make Easy Orange Posset
Our full recipe card is located below. But first, let’s walk through these simple steps so you can see how to make this easy orange posset recipe.
- COOK THE CREAM: First, zest one orange, and set it aside. Next, on the stove top, combine the cream, sugar, and zest. Bring to a gentle boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar, and reduce the heat to simmer for 15 minutes (you will need to watch the mixture carefully, see our notes below). Then set it aside, off the heat, and allow the cream to rest for 20 minutes.

2. STRAIN THE MIXTURE: Use a small fine-mesh sieve into a large 2-cup measuring glass. Pressing on zest to release all the liquid. Discard zest. Then divide into four (4-ounce) glasses or bowls.

3. REFRIGERATE: Place the glasses, uncovered in the refrigerator to chill until firm, up to 3 hours. Then garnish as you desire, and serve.
How to Serve Orange Posset
There are a few ways to serving this delicious English orange flavored pudding. Here are a few great tips:
- This English pudding is best served in small 4-ounce cups, ramekins, or crystal stemware, as I did here, for a lovely presentation.
- Refrigerate uncovered for at least 3 hours to set.
- Before serving, garnish each glass with tiny orange wedges and a berry on top, or serve it with any shortbread cookie, or a small chocolate on a plate beside it. Everyone will love it.
Notes & Tips for Success
- EQUIPMENT: This dessert is made with minimal ingredients and equipment. You will need a zester, a small fine mesh sieve, and a 2-cup glass measuring cup. Best to use a 6-inch saucepan that’s 5 inches tall to simmer the cream.
- ORANGES: It’s best to buy “organic” fresh navel oranges for two reasons: for the best flavor, and when zesting, you want to avoid pesticide residues. But, if you don’t have organic, it’s best to wash them in a bowl with water and baking soda for a few minutes to help remove some of the pesticide residues.
- SERVINGS: This recipe will yield 4 + 1/2 servings (about 3-ounces each). And, you can easily increase the servings, using 2-ounce cordial glasses. Plus, you can get 8 servings if you double the ingredients for larger servings (about 3 to 4 ounces).
- PATIENCE: You only need some patience to make this dessert because it needs to chill and set in the refrigerator before you serve it, and at least 3 hours.
- MAKE IT AHEAD: It’s a good idea to make it the night before. You can also make this Orange Posset up to two days in advance and refrigerate before serving. Once fully chilled, cover with plastic wrap to keep fresh.
- OTHER FLAVORS: Substitute another citrus for the orange. Try it with lemon, lime, and even grapefruit, these would make a delicious posset as well. The interaction of the citrus and cream is the key to the thickened texture in this dessert.
- DAIRY-FREE: Unfortunately, there are no dairy substitutions that will work. However, if you happen try this with coconut cream, and it works? Please tell us – it will help our dairy-free friends to know.

Chill and Serve
This orange posset will make a delightful dessert. It is a smooth and creamy pudding with a hint of orange everyone will love. Make it, chill and serve!
Enjoy!
