Fresh Fruit Salad… and Better!

There’s nothing better during the spring and summer months than a fresh fruit salad to serve at the end of a meal. It’s the perfect dessert for all outdoor gatherings and festivities.

Plus, you can easily find fresh fruit at your local grocery store or farm stand. Fresh fruit salad is the healthiest treat you can serve family and friends.

And, this is the time of year when you can find a delicious variety of seasonal berries and grapes that are perfect for this salad.

Best of all, once you clean the fruit properly, the rest is easy.

How to Shop for Fresh Berries?

First, when shopping for fresh berries, you need to look at them closely. We prefer to buy “organic ones.” You will pay a little more for them, but they are worth it. Next, the berries need to be firm to the touch and not fully ripe or soft.

How to Clean Fresh Berries Properly?

Now, it is important to properly clean the fresh grapes and berries. And, by that, we mean not a gentle rinse, as we have done in the past. But a full washing of them, in a bowl filled with cold water, and scattered with baking soda on top.

Do each fruit separately. Strawberries, blueberries, and grapes can be left soaking for 15 to 20 minutes. Raspberries are more fragile berries and will only need a few minutes to soak in the bowl, then rinse and drain.

After, we drain them in a colander and give them a good rinse under cold running water. Then scatter them on paper towels to absorb as much water as possible.

**Important Tip About Make-Ahead Fruit Salad:**

Planning to make ahead? Ok, but listen up! Fruit salad should be served as soon as possible after it is made.

However, if you plan to prepare it a few hours in advance, you can cut all the fruit and place it in a serving bowl without adding anything else. Cover the bowl and keep it chilled in the refrigerator until you’re ready to serve.

When you are ready to serve, stir in the lemon juice and sugar at least 5 to 10 minutes before serving. This will help keep the fruit bright, crisp, and fresh, preventing it from becoming soggy.
