What is Broccolini?

Broccolini is part of the broccoli family.  It is a cross between broccoli and Chinese broccoli, with smaller florets and longer stems.

In addition, broccolini has a similar appearance to broccoli rabe, but it’s not bitter like the rabe.

Instead, broccolini is sweeter in taste, which is ideal if you are cooking this broccoli for the kids. But remember not to overcook them. They have a delicious, crunchy texture to them.

Nowadays, broccolini is considered to be among the ‘super-foods,’ and as a vegetable, it is rich in Vitamins C, A, iron, and folate.  A healthy vegetable to serve your family as a side dish that will complement any meat, poultry, or fish.

Our family loves this dish; we hope you will too!

Recipe Tips…

  • Broccolini already comes cut and trimmed for you; therefore, you won’t have to do any prep work, except rinsing and then draining.

  • However, if the stems of too thick, it’s a good idea to take a sharp knife and slice down the middle of each stem. This will ensure the broccolini will cook all the way through, leaving no waste on the ends.
  • While sautéing, keep an eye on them.  When they turn bright dark green, this means they are almost ready, so give a taste.  Then decide if you think they need to cook a little longer or so.  You want the broccoli to have a nice, tender bite and a little crunch to it.

  • Then you can drizzle a little extra-virgin olive oil over them before you serve.
  • Best part? Broccolini has no bitter taste, and your family will enjoy this broccolini for years to come.

    1. Thanks Abbe, if you like broccoli rabe, we make it the same exact way, adding some chicken broth to cut the bitterness to minimal. I hope our recipe can persuade your husband. Let us know if it works! Have a great day!

  1. Hi gals! We have broccoli rabe or broccolini, it's all the same to me, at least 2x a week in our house. Our favorite way is to blanch it and then sautee it with shallots. So good. I love your idea as well. Can't wait to try it as broccoli rabe is one of our favorite year round vegetables.

    1. Hi Jackie! We do too! We make broccoli every week as well. Your way of making it with the shallots sounds really good too, we'll have to try it that way one day. Have a great day !xxoo
