What makes these Orange Crumb Bars special?
- These orange crumb bars are delicious little treats, made with real oranges.
- They’re easy to make because this recipe uses the same buttery-oats crumble mixture for the crust and the topping.
- Each bar has a creamy center with a crumbly topping. They are sweet, with a delightful flavor of orange in the creamy filling, bringing a smile to everyone who tastes them.
- You can serve them chilled or at room temperature. But they taste best chilled.
- Best of all, you don’t need any utensils when serving these bars, only a napkin is good enough.
Quick Tip! For an additional punch of orange flavor…
For my recipe, I decided to incorporate some orange marmalade into the creamy filling.
I used an Italian-Sicilian orange marmalade (I found at Home Goods). But I’m sure you can use any “good-quality” orange marmalade with this recipe.
Ingredients for our Orange Crumb Bars:
Besides the staple pantry ingredients needed for these bars, such as flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt you will also need:
- old-fashioned rolled oats
- light brown sugar
- butter
- orange zest
- orange juice
- sweetened condensed milk
- egg yolks
- and orange marmalade
How to Make these Orange Crumb Bars?
There are a few easy steps to make these bars in minutes:
1. Zest one navel orange, and “juice it” to get at least 1/3 cup of fresh squeezed orange juice. Then set them both aside.
2. Next, in a large mixing bowl, make the butter-oats-flour mixture. Then pat half the crumbs on the bottom of your prepared baking pan.
3. Bake “the crust” for 8 to 10 minutes to set it. Set it aside while you make the orange filling. (NOTE: you will need to keep the oven on to bake it again).
4. Whisk together all the ingredients for the orange filling in a medium-sized bowl. Then pour the filling over the bottom crust.
5. Then top with the remaining crumbs on top.
6. Bake for 20 minutes, until golden around the edges. Then chill before cutting into bars. Yields: 16 bars
NOTES and TIPS…
- This recipe calls for a 9 x 9-inch baking pan. And, it will make about 12 to 16 crumb bars, depending on the size you cut them.
- It is a good idea to spray your baking pan with cooking spray, then line it with parchment paper. It will make it much easier to fit the parchment paper as it sticks to the pan, and stays in place.
- The butter should be “cold” to make the crumble mixture.
- This dessert is best cut into small bars after it has been chilled for at least one hour. If they are too warm, they will fall apart.
TO STORE and FREEZE…
1. To Store: Place these bars in a sealed container and keep them chilled in the refrigerator, they will stay fresh for up to 3 days.
2. To Freeze: You can freeze them either before cutting them into bars or after. But be sure they are completely cooled before you wrap them in aluminum foil, then freeze them. Good for up to one month.
Everyone will enjoy these crumb bars with their sweet orange flavor in every bite.
Try them and have a great day!
