How to Make a Blackberry Smash Cocktail?

This blackberry smash cocktail only needs a few ingredients. If you’ve never made one before, don’t worry. Simply gather all the ingredients and follow the directions in our recipe card below. It’s very easy. But first, let’s go over what you will need to make this fabulous cocktail!

What You’ll Need to Make Blackberry Smash Cocktail:

For our blackberry smash cocktail recipe, you will need the following ingredients, plus a few cocktail gadgets:

A SHAKER: To make this cocktail, you will need a cocktail shaker and a few fresh blackberries to muddle in the shaker.

A MEASURING CUP: You will need to measure each ingredient with a cocktail jigger and add them to your cocktail shaker. Shake to mix, and pour the mixture into each glass over crushed ice. That’s it!

FRESH BLACKBERRIES: You will need about a pint of fresh blackberries. They provide their lovely purple-tinted color and sweet flavors.

LIQUEUR: You will need some Amaretto Liqueur. This will give a nutty warmth flavor to the sweetness of the blackberries in this cocktail.

BOURBON: Choose your favorite bottle of bourbon that you may have.

LEMON:  We prefer freshly squeezed lemon juice to give it that refreshing flavor.

SPARKLING WATER: Choose any lemon-flavored sparkling water for this cocktail.

CRUSHED ICE: You will need a bowl of crushed ice, and a lot of it. Then fill each glass with enough crushed ice, at least 1/2 full to 3/4 full.

How To Make Ahead for Gatherings?

If you need to plan and make a batch of this cocktail ahead of time to serve at a friend’s party or BBQ, you can do so with ease. Here are a few tips to help you make it ahead:

  • Make a large pitcher of this blackberry smash drink, tripling the ingredients. But leave out the crushed ice… until the very end.
  • Cover your pitcher with clear wrap and keep it chilled in the refrigerator until you are ready to serve.
  • When you’re ready to serve, use a large spoon to give the mixture a stir. Then add crushed ice to all the cocktail glasses and pour the mixture into each glass, about 3/4 full.
  • Here, you can fill the rest of each glass with sparkling water to the rim. Add the pick with blackberries on top, as shown in our photo below, and serve.

Substitutions for Blackberry Smash Cocktail

With some luck, you may have some of these ingredients in your home, but if you don’t, feel free to make substitutions of your own. Here are some ideas and suggestions for use as substitutions:

  • Instead of Amaretto, you can use aย Blackberry Liqueur. Sometimes this one is hard to find. But you can ask a salesman at your local liquor store.
  • Don’t have lemon-flavored sparkling water? No worries, you can leave it out and use additional fresh lemon juice, or some lemonade you have on hand.
  • Don’t have Bourbon? Skip it. Or, you can use ginger beer instead.

FAQ’s

1. Can we make it a mocktail? Yes, you can. Fill each glass with crushed ice. Muddle 6 to 7 blackberries in the shaker. Omit the liqueur and bourbon, and add 4 shots of Amaretto syrup, lemon juice, and a splash of lemon-flavored sparkling water. Shake and pour! And garnish to your desires.

2. Do we need to use a cocktail strainer? No, it is not necessary. You can use one if you prefer not to have the blackberry seeds in your cocktail glass, but we chose not to use the strainer.

3. Can we add additional blackberries? Yes, if you prefer a darker shade of purple in the glass, by all means, you can add additional muddled blackberries.

4. Can we use frozen blackberries? We prefer using only fresh blackberries, but if you prefer, you can try it. And let us know how they turn out. The fresh blackberries will give a fresh flavor and a prettier presentation to the cocktail.
