London Broil Steak Grilled to Perfection! by 2sistersrecipes.com

London Broil Steak Grilled to Perfection ~ always turns out moist, juicy, and tender every time! Making dinner alfresco can be very enjoyable!  We love to cook, but when it comes to grilling steaks, only my husband does it best!  He has it down to a science (so he thinks).  When he grills, he gets it right – no matter the size of the steak.  He can grill a London Broil Beef Steak to perfection!

Here are some of his tips on How to Grill a London Broil Steak to Perfection!

  • First, it’s very important that you allow the meat to warm up to room temperature, at least one hour before you cook it.

  • It is equally important to heat your grill until extremely hot before you throw the meat onto it.

  • The thickness of the steak is as important, it should be a good cut and at least two inches thick.  This will always guarantee while grilling it on the BBQ, the outside of the steak may be charred but the inside will be very tender and juicy.

  • Also, adding butter on top of the meat while grilling is crucial to giving the meat its tender and juicy flavors. Butter makes a huge difference in taste and you will notice the difference the first time you add it to the meat.  So don’t skip it.

3.  Cook the steak for about 3 minutes, then open the lid and flip over the meat.  NOW LEAVE the lid open.

4.  Add garlic powder and black pepper generously on top.

*QUICK NOTE: Depending on the size of your grill and how many BTUs it generates, you can lower the heat to “medium-high.”

Next, place 2 tablespoons of butter on top of the meat to melt while cooking.  And cook for an additional 3 minutes.

5.  Flip over the meat again to the other side.  Sprinkle with garlic powder and black pepper again.

Add the other 2 tablespoons of butter on top.  Cook the steak for 4 minutes more.

*NOTE: Keep in mind, that the butter will increase the “flames” for a few seconds…. and that’s Ok. But you can lower the heat to help decrease those flames.

Total time, is about 7 minutes on each side of the meat, for medium.  And about 5 minutes per side for medium-rare.

  1. I read this recipe 10 times but the cooking time doesn’t add up to 7 min per side. it’s 3 min one side, then 4 min the other side, then 3 min and done. That’s 10 min not 14.

    1. Hi Jeannine,
I hope to clarify the times in this recipe. First, please keep in mind, that these cooking times are “approximate” and not exact. And yes, it states: for “medium” it’s about 7 minutes per side, and for “medium-rare” it’s about 5 minutes per side, which equals 10 minutes. Also, with most recipes, the times will vary, due to obvious reasons: how “thick” the meat is, and the grill you use, and how many BTUs, etc. I hope this helps with any confusion you may have.
And I hope you enjoyed the recipe. Have a good evening. 🙂

  2. Thank you so much, I cook a lot but London broil‘s are always iffy with me and my grill wouldn’t get hot enough so I seared it in a pan in the kitchen and I brought it out to the grill and cooked it per your instructions and it came out to be absolutely freaking delicious. I just like to put Montreal steak seasoning on it,
Goya adobo, garlic, onion, salt and pepper. Delicious!!!
    sincerely,

    Suzanne Possenti

  3. Mine caused a big fire in the BBQ! I had to turn it all off and they burnt. What did I do wrong? I believe it was the butter? Tips?

    1. Hi Myrna,
We have never heard of that happening before, and we grill London broil often. In fact, we grilled one again at our family’s barbecue, earlier today.
The only thing we can think of – is that if the grill hasn’t been cleaned before you start to grill, and possibly there could be some grease build-up from previous cooking, that will cause a fire to
      occur.

    1. Hi Linda, if you followed my instructions and it didn’t turn out “well-done” then I would go back and tell the store where you purchased the meat.

      1. Your instructions mentioned medium and rare. If you follow your directions why would anyone expect it to be well done ?

        1. Hi Craig, there are people who prefer their steaks to be medium-well done. I know plenty of people who prefer it that way.

  4. My London broil is like 4 inches thick, how long should I cook it for med rare? It’s quite a large London broil.

      1. What would you recommend for how to best deal with London broil that is only 1 inch thick? It was all the store had left

        1. Hi Chuck, I hope this is not too late. But, I would recommend about 4 minutes per side – twice – for the 1-inch thick London Broil. The second time you turn them over, add the butter on top.

  5. I followed this recipe exactly and OH SO AMAZING!!!!! Hubby and my son devoured it. From now on this is the only way I’ll cook london broil. No need to marinate it. It made me look like a real chef lol.

    1. Hi Jennifer! So happy to hear you had a great outcome! Thanks so much and welcome to our blog, it’s so nice to meet you! Looking forward to you trying more of our recipes…. have a great night!
      Xo Anna

  6. In Step three it says to leave the lid open. Does that mean to leave it open for the remainder of the cooking?

  7. I marinated a steak my own way just now but I could never get the timing right . going to try 6 minutes on each side with a 1 1/2 inch steak thanks!

    1. Sounds good Bobby! Let us know how it turns out for you. Keep in mind, outdoor grills vary in temperatures, and these are guidelines to assist with the cooking. Enjoy!

        1. Hi Donna! Your grill should be preheated on high heat, about 500F or above. And it should be extremely hot before you place the steak on it. Keep in mind, the printable recipe card is on the bottom of the post. I hope this helps!:)
