Overview: Ingredients for our Peppers and Onions Recipe
You will need the following 6 ingredients for our peppers and onions recipe. Keep in mind, you can increase the amounts of each ingredient for the number of servings needed and to your taste.
- Onions – we used one extra-large yellow onion, but if you prefer, you can use 3 onions, sliced.
- Bell Peppers – we used only 3 bell peppers, which already come in a convenient package of one red, one orange, and one yellow. But, you add more if you like.
- Extra-Virgin Olive Oil – olive oil is needed to sauté the peppers on medium-low heat.
- Salt – enough salt to flavor them, and we like to start with 1/2 teaspoon of salt, and go from there, adjusting as we need to. And some black pepper is optional.
- Garlic Powder – we love to add garlic powder to these peppers and onions, and a sprinkle (about 1/8 teaspoon) is good enough.
- Crushed Red Pepper Flakes – if you want these peppers and onions to pop in flavor? Then we recommend you toss in a dash or sprinkle of chili flakes.
How to Make Peppers and Onions?
Is this your first time making peppers and onions? No worries! Super easy to follow our directions below!
First Step: Prep all the bell peppers, rinse, remove all seeds, remove cord and discard them. Then slice them lengthwise. Then peel the skin off the onion, slice it in half, and then slice it into thin slices lengthwise.
Second Step: Grab a large non-stick skillet, at least a 12-inch one, and place it on the stovetop. Pour only 3 tablespoons of olive oil and turn on the moderate heat. Add the sliced onion, and use a wooden spoon to help break up the onion. Cook the onions on moderate-low heat for 5 minutes.

Third Step: Add the peppers, plus 1 additional tablespoon of olive oil. Scatter over them with salt, garlic powder, and a dash of crushed red pepper. Stir with a wooden spoon to combine the seasonings, and cook for 3 minutes.

Fourth Step: Now COVER with a lid and allow the peppers and onions to saute for 15 to 20 more minutes, stirring every 5 minutes, so they don’t stick to the bottom of the skillet.
QUICK NOTE: If you notice the peppers and onions are sticking to the skillet, just drizzle additional olive oil into the pan. Also, if you notice the peppers are burning or getting too charred too quickly, reduce the heat.

At this point, your kitchen will smell amazing!
Final Step: After 20 minutes, they should be ready to serve. Give them a stir, taste, and adjust for salt. Turn off the heat and keep them covered until you are ready to serve. QUICK TIP: Leaving them covered, and on stovetop, you can easily reheat them for a few minutes before serving.
Serve them warm and in any serving platter you have, and enjoy.
