Overview: Ingredients You Will Need

For this easy recipe, you will need these 5 simple ingredients, plus a round 9-inch Pyrex baking dish:

  • BAKING DISH:ย We preferred to use one 9-inch pie baking dish. But feel free to use an different baking dish or baking pan.
  • RAVIOLI: Choose a package of refrigerated round spinach and cheese ravioli (if you have a special diet, see our notes below).
  • TOMATO SAUCE: Choose any “already” prepared tomato sauce you have on hand. We prefer to use our mom’s quick marinara sauce, which we have on hand. And, sometimes, we switch up things and use our Authentic Italian Tomato Sauce (family recipe).
  • CHEESE: The only 2 cheeses needed for this recipe are: shredded mozzarella and grated parmesan cheese.
  • BASIL: Choose only some fresh basil for this recipe. It will make the flavor pop!

Our full printable recipe card is located at the bottom. But first, let’s run through our 4 easy-to-follow steps to making our ravioli bake casserole:

STEP #1: Pour in some marinara sauce into the baking dish, and spread it evenly to cover the bottom of the baking dish.

STEP #2: Lay the ravioli side by side and in one single layer. Next, spoon some tomato sauce over the ravioli and scatter with both kinds of cheeses, grated parmesan, and shredded mozzarella.

STEP #3: Lay the second layer of ravioli on top. And again, spoon with the remaining sauce, grated parmesan, and shredded mozzarella. Optional: toss some basil leaves on top. (This dish will have only 2 layers of ravioli. And that’s sufficient.)

FINAL STEP 4: Cover with aluminum foil and bake in a preheated oven (350F) for about 35 to 40 minutes. Then uncover, and continue to bake for an additional 5 minutes until the sauce is bubbling around the edges and the cheese on top is completely melted.

*QUICK NOTE: Here is where you can cover and store it in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake it. Or you can bake it for dinner, and reheat before serving. Here is where you can freeze it for another time, then bake it.

Recipe Tips

To Store, Freeze, and Reheat…

  • Storing: Cover the baking dish with clear wrap or aluminum foil and keep it chilled in your refrigerator for up to 3 days. You can reheat leftovers easily in the microwave or your oven until warm.
  • Freeze: If baked, it’s best to wait until the ravioli has cooled down before freezing. Then cover and freeze for up to 3 weeks. You can freeze it before baking it as well.
  • To Thaw: It is best to leave the casserole on your counter for several hours, or thaw it in your refrigerator overnight. Then reheat or bake as directed in our recipe card.
  • To Reheat: Leftovers are never a problem to reheat the next day. You can easily reheat in the microwave or the oven.

FAQ’s

1. Can we use “Square” ravioli? I had a package of refrigerated round ravioli that I found at Costco. But you can use the “square” ravioli as well. Also, any ravioli of your choice, cheese-filled or other fillings, will work well.

2. How much tomato sauce do we need? I used only 2 cups for our 9-inch baking dish and about 16 ravioli.

3. Can we use “jarred” tomato sauce? Yes, you can. If you prefer to use your favorite jarred sauce with this recipe, go for it! And, we recommend a simple tomato and basil sauce.

4. How many layers of ravioli are in this casserole? I made only 2 layers of ravioli, and that’s because the ravioli I used was very thick, and also, I used a shallow baking dish.

5. Can we add additional layers of ravioli? Yes, but I recommend using a larger size casserole dish and not as shallow as the pie dish, as I did. Also, keep in mind that you will need additional marinara sauce and grated cheeses.

6. Can we add meat to this casserole? I don’t see why not. Feel free to add a meat sauce like our mom’s classic bolognese sauce , or a crumbled Italian sausage to give it more protein.

    1. Hi Leslie, yes you can use frozen ravioli, but I would allow the ravioli to sit out on a plate “to thaw out” for about 10 to 15 minutes before making the casserole. Otherwise, you could end up with ravioli that is undercooked. I hope this helps! ๐Ÿ™‚ thanks for stopping by and thank you for your support!

    1. Yes, this is one meal you’ll enjoy making often! I bought those spinach and cheese ravioli at Costco. They have them all year round. Enjoy! ๐Ÿ™‚
