Steak and Cheese Sandwich

Who doesn’t enjoy a Steak and Cheese Sandwich now and then? Crispy Italian bread with layers of deliciousness – it’s so good, the hungry men in your family will love it!

Our steak and cheese sandwich is a simple sandwich made with a few staple ingredients you may already have in your pantry, plus some leftover steak, of course.

You can use any steak from the night before. Try it with your grilled London Broil Steak, or our New York Strip Steak Grilled. And, if you have filet mignon, they all will work nicely with our sandwich.

Our steak and cheese sandwich is layered with slices of mozzarella cheese, thin slices of steak, roasted red peppers, and some fresh greens (it’s what I had in the fridge). Then I topped it with a drizzle of pesto sauce and balsamic vinegar and grilled it until the cheese was softened, and the bread was crispy.

It was so amazing! Every bite was crunchy and mouth-watering, gosh… we couldn’t stop eating.

Highlights & Great Tips for this Steak and Cheese Sandwich:

  • Use any leftover steak you may have from the night before. It’s best to have it thinly sliced before you store the leftover steak in your refrigerator.
  • I added some fresh spinach leaves to get some “healthy greens” in there, but you can add any fresh greens you prefer.  Also, use only the leaves, and remove any large stems from the spinach.
  • Go ahead and add sliced avocados, caramelized onions, and tomatoes if you prefer.
  • We adore the flavors of sweet roasted peppers. I found a jar in our pantry, and again, you can leave them out if you don’t have any on hand.
  • Plus, we had some fresh mozzarella on hand. You can use any cheese you prefer with a steak sandwich. Try it with Gruyere or Provolone cheese. You can’t go wrong.
  • You can make as many sandwiches as you need with our recipe.
  • When you combine the steak with some of these staples? You get an amazing sandwich with flavors that are truly restaurant-worthy.

For our steak and cheese sandwich recipe, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Any Leftover Steak – sliced into thin pieces.
  • Roasted Red Peppers from a jar – (I used Mancini)
  • Fresh Baby Spinach – you will only need a handful of spinach leaves.
  • Fresh Mozzarella – sliced into pieces

How to Make a Steak and Cheese Sandwich?

Don’t forget our full recipe card is located at the bottom of this page. But first, let’s go over these simple steps:

  1. Heat a skillet on medium heat, or heat the outside grill.  Slice open each roll and spread some butter on both sides of each roll.  Place the roll open face down on the grill or skillet and toast the rolls until the bread is crisp and lightly brown, about 1 to 2 minutes.

2. Divide the steak among the rolls.  Add a few slices of mozzarella cheese, then 2 or 3 slices of roasted red peppers, and a small bunch of spinach.

3. Then drizzle with some pesto and a little balsamic on top before closing the sandwich.

4. Close the sandwich and place it back on the grill.  Place a metal spatula on top and hold it down to apply pressure to keep the sandwiches closed, for about 1 to 2 minutes.  Remove and serve. Serves 2 or 3

  1. My word, Anna & Liz! This steak sandwich looks scrumptious. Lately I've been fixated on a Chicken Caesar Club sandwich which is made on homemade ciabatta, and uses pancetta. I hope to see Healthy Solutions in the store…I'd like to check it out. Happy weekend, ladies.

  2. I adore a good steak and cheese but lately I've been eating a hummus wrap with oven roasted tomatoes and spinach that seriously satisfies! Steak Panini's are a perfect way to enjoy left overs. We're on OBX right now enjoying a nice long family extravaganza – seriously eating way too much! Looking forward to getting back to normal eating 🙂 Have a great week.

  3. My favorite sandwich is from a local restaurant/bakery in RI. It's a hot pressed vegan sandwich with seasoned roasted vegetables (squash, zucchini, eggplant), spinach, and white bean garlic lemon hummus. It's AMAZING.

  4. Great looking sandwich, I can taste it now, one of my favorites! Depending on my mood I could come up with a bunch of favorite sandwiches but tonight I could eat a capicola, salami, provolone and all the fixings on hard Italian bread! 🙂
