A Classic Grilled Cheese Sandwich…

  • A typical grilled cheese is a hot sandwich usually prepared by heating one or more slices of cheese between slices of bread until the cheese is melted and gooey.
  • It is an American classic sandwich, that became popular in the 60s and it is still today delicious!

Ingredients Needed for our Grilled Cheese & Apple Sandwich…

When making this grilled cheese sandwich, we added a few ingredients to give it more flavor and texture.

1. BREAD: choose your favorite sliced white bread or sourdough bread that is equally good.

2. CHEESE: choose sliced Swiss cheese or shredded. It’s a good idea if the sliced cheeses are at room temperature, to ensure melting.

3. SPINACH: a handful of fresh baby spinach added always gives a nice crisp, fresh flavor.

4. APPLE: thinly sliced Granny Smith apple is used for this sandwich, it not only offers a nice crunch, but it adds the perfect savory notes to this sandwich.

5. BACON: choose your favorite bacon, and cook it in the skillet, (or oven, or microwave). Then use the same skillet with its drippings to grill the sandwich.

6. MUSTARD: a squeeze of Dijon mustard in this grilled cheese, will give it a punch of flavor to this sandwich.

7. MAYONNAISE: a small squeeze of mayo on the bread will do wonders for this grilled cheese sandwich.

Options for Variations…

When it comes to making your grilled cheese sandwich, there are so many options to “turn up the volume.” Here are some ideas:

  • try adding some slices of your favorite apple.
  • choose your favorite cheeses, like sharp Cheddar, nutty Gruyere, or even sliced mozzarella or provolone.
  • try it with slices of prosciutto instead of bacon.

It’s a simple, but amazingly flavorful grilled cheese sandwich-hands down!

Notes and Tips…

  • To make them easier! Cook them in your panini press, no turning!
  • If you don’t have a panini press, cook them in a frying pan or skillet.
  • Cook the bacon before you start: either in the microwave, oven or in your skillet.
  • If you cook your bacon in a skillet, you can use the same skillet with the grease from the bacon to grill the sandwich, this will make it extra crispy and tastier.
  • Double the ingredients to make additional sandwiches.

Q & A…

1. How To Cook With a Panini Press? Heat your electric panini press. When it is hot, place the sandwich on it, close it, and cook it for 3 to 5 minutes until the bread is toasted and the cheese is melted. Allow to cool, cut in half and serve warm.

2. How To Cook Bacon in the Oven? You can cook the bacon in a 400-degree oven, arrange the bacon on a baking rack in a single layer, and roast it for 20 minutes. Then drain on paper towels.

3. If You Prefer to Use “Grated” Cheese, How Much Per Sandwich? You can pile about 1/3 cup of grated cheese per sandwich. Pile it on top evenly, on top of the bacon, the top it with the other slice of bread.

4. Do We Need to Add Some Butter To Our Bread? No butter is required with our recipe.
