The Spiral-Cut Ham…

Every time we host a holiday dinner with family and friends, some of our family members prefer ham on the menu rather than turkey. But not just any ham, an Uncured Spiral Bone-in Ham!

  • For starters, spiral-cut hams come “already” pre-sliced.
  • Plus, they come from the pig’s back leg, which is leaner and less fatty cut. This means they tend to dry out if cooked incorrectly.
  • Remember, that “uncured hams” cost a little more but they are worth it!

There are 2 cooking methods for preparing and baking spiral-cut glazed hams:

A. THE OVEN: one method is baking the ham in the oven.

B. SLOW COOKER: the other method is in a slow cooker.

 

 

Ingredients Needed to Make Best Spiral Glazed Ham:

For our recipe, you will only need these 2 ingredients for the ham: (!Full Recipe Card Below!)

  • 2 Navel Oranges: – to keep the ham moist and juicy while baking.
  • The Glaze: this is an all-natural, already-made Brown Sugar & Spice Ham Glaze that brings out the rich, savory flavors in this uncured ham.

Cook’s Notes and Tips…

  • No need to make your glaze and NO reason to use “the packet” that most hams come with, which comes with unwanted preservatives, and additives. We discard the packet.
  • The ingredients in this one jar for ham glaze are already done for you!  It is a perfect blend of brown sugar, mustard seed, vinegar, pineapple juice, salt, spices, horseradish, and white wine.

Steps To Make It…

Here are two methods of cooking your glazed ham

A. BAKE the HAM in the OVEN:

1.   First thing to do, is to remove the ham from its packaging, and do this inside your sink.  Give it a quick rinse, then lightly shake off excess water.   Transfer the ham to a roasting pan and lay the ham with its flat-side down in a large roasting pan.

2.  Second, take 1 navel orange and squeeze the juice directly over the entire ham.

3.   Next, begin to glaze the ham with this already-made brown sugar and spice ham glaze, and glaze the ham like you are frosting a cake, using the back of a large spoon or a small basting brush. Use as much as you need.  I used the entire jar for a large spiral ham.

4.   Slice the second orange into several wedges and place them around the ham, as shown in the photo.

Now your uncured ham is ready for the oven.

5. Then the ham (uncovered) is baked in a preheated oven, and on low heat for only 10 to 12 minutes per pound. (*full recipe below).

The Second Method:

B. WITH a SLOW-COOKER:

  1. First, a 7-quart oval slow cooker can accommodate a 10-pound ham. Place the ham in a large slow-cooker, flat/ face side down.

2. Spoon or brush the glaze onto the ham, and squeeze the orange juice over it with our 2 ingredients.

3. Cover and cook on “high” for 2 to 3 hours or on “low heat” for 4 to 5 hours. It is recommended the internal temperature should read at least 140 degrees.

4. Next, Turn on your oven to “Broil” and rearrange the racks in the oven to fit the ham below several inches from the heating element. Remove the ham from your slow-cooker and place it in your baking pan. Spoon and brush any remaining glaze over the ham.

5. Broil the ham in the oven for 3 to 4 minutes, until it browns on top. Do not allow the ham to burn. Remove and set it aside to rest for a few minutes before serving.

Storing and Freezing Leftovers:

  • Store slices of leftover ham in an air-tight container and in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. These are great for making sandwiches.
  • Also, you can cut the leftover ham into pieces, and save 1 or 2 cup portions in the freezer, and for up to 3 months.
  • Then use the ham for other recipes and future dishes like omelets, easy mini frittatas, and quiches, or toss them into soups, stews, and even salads.

2 Steps for Best Spiral Glazed Ham

2 Easy Steps for Best Spiral Glazed Ham is one that will deliver the best tasting and perfectly glazed ham every time and for every holiday! Best of all, 2 simple ingredients will guarantee the best flavor ever!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 1 hour 30 minutes
Total Time 1 hour 35 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 large navel oranges
  • 1 jar of Boar's Head brown sugar & spices ham glaze
  • 6 to 7 pound uncured spiral ham

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (163 C). Then make room in your oven to fit your roasting pan.
  2. Remove the ham from its package and give it a quick rinse. Next, lay it down in a large roasting pan with its flat-side down.
  3. Juice 1 navel orange and pour the juice over the ham.
  4. Slice the other navel orange into wedges, and surround the ham with the orange wedges.
  5. Using a spatula, spread the brown sugar & spices ham glaze all over the ham, as if you are frosting a cake, and spread as much of the glaze as needed.
  6. BAKE, uncovered for only 10 to 12 minutes per pound.
  7. Remove from oven and transfer to a cutting board or serving platter. Spoon over the ham with any remaining juices and glaze from the roasting pan.
  8. Serve immediately while warm.

Notes

Store slices of leftover ham in an air-tight container and in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. These are great for making sandwiches. Or use the ham for other recipes and future dishes like omelets, easy mini frittatas, and quiches, or toss them into soups and stews, and even salads.
