London Broil Steak Grilled To Perfection!
We love to cook, but when it comes to grilling steaks, only my husband does it best! He has it down to a science (so he thinks).
When he grills, he gets it right – no matter the size of the steak. He can grill a London Broil Beef Steak to perfection! And a great steak, thinly sliced will make a delicious dinner. It is FANTASTIC!
It tastes wonderful when paired with a simple Italian Tomato Salad and some crusty bread on the side. (It’s the best!) But feel free to serve it with your favorite sides.
Tips on How to Grill a London Broil Steak Perfectly?
Whether you grill it outside or cook it in the oven, try these simple cooking tips:
- First, you must allow the meat to warm up to room temperature for at least one hour before you cook it.
- It is equally important to heat your grill until extremely hot before you throw the meat onto it.
- The thickness of the steak is as important, it should be a good cut and at least two inches thick. This will always guarantee while grilling it on the BBQ, the outside of the steak may be charred but the inside will be very tender and juicy.
- Also, adding butter on top of the meat while grilling is crucial to giving the meat its tender and juicy flavors. Butter makes a huge difference in taste and you will notice the difference the first time you add it to the meat. So don’t skip it.
Ok, let’s make it…
How To Grill London Broil Steak on the BBQ?
*You can follow along below with our step-by-step on this recipe, or jump down to the bottom of the post for the full recipe card. But first, let’s run through the steps before you begin:
1. First, allow the steak to warm up! Minimum 30 minutes to 1 hour.
2. Heat the grill outside for about 10 minutes. Place the meat onto a dish, and allow it to warm up at room temperature. Lightly sprinkle both sides of the steak with salt. Once the grill is extremely hot (should be about 600 degrees on the BBQ Thermometer), place the meat onto the grill. Close the lid.

3. Cook the steak for about 3 minutes, then open the lid and flip over the meat. NOW LEAVE the lid open.
4. Add garlic powder and black pepper generously on top.
*Helpful Tip: Depending on the size of your grill and how many BTUs it generates, you can lower the heat to “medium-high.”

.5. Next, place 2 tablespoons of butter on top of the meat to melt while cooking. And cook for an additional 3 minutes.
6. Flip over the meat again to the other side. Sprinkle with garlic powder and black pepper again. *Next, add the other 2 tablespoons of butter on top. And, cook the steak for 4 minutes more.
*NOTE: Keep in mind that the butter will increase the “flames” for a few seconds…. and that’s OK. But you can lower the heat to help decrease those flames.
Total time: is about 7 minutes on each side of the meat, for “medium.” And about 4 to 5 minutes per side for “medium-rare.”

7. Remove the meat and allow it to sit, and rest on a cutting board for a few minutes before serving, at least 5 minutes.

8. Then carve the meat at a slight angle. Slice thinly and serve immediately.

- Also, you can chop the leftover steak into small pieces and toss it into a soup, like our Beef Vegetable Soup recipe, or make sandwiches the next day for lunch.

I’ve made this in the past with remarkable results however tonight, not so much. Grilling outside in the winter with the lid open seemed to slow down the cooking significantly. I even added a few extra minutes but it was beyond rare inside. I set steak out for 1hr a head of time so not sure what else I would change besides using a thermometer. I will have to find a way to reheat the leftovers without it drying out.
Hi Angela, yes, grilling steak outdoors in the winter sometimes can be challenging. We recommend grilling with the lid closed while grilling. This will help the flame and heat to grill the steak correctly and maybe even in less time. I hope this helps!
Have a great day!
warmly,
anna
Thank you so much, I cook a lot but London broil‘s are always iffy with me and my grill wouldn’t get hot enough so I seared it in a pan in the kitchen and I brought it out to the grill and cooked it per your instructions and it came out to be absolutely freaking delicious!! IT TURNED OUT AMAZING! I just like to put Montreal steak seasoning on it,
Goya adobo, garlic, onion, salt and pepper. Delicious!!!
sincerely,
Suzanne Possenti
Thank you Suzanne for the lovely comment! We are so glad to hear you had a great outcome with our recipe. Looking forward to hearing from you again. Have a great week! 🙂

Mine caused a big fire in the BBQ! I had to turn it all off and they burnt. What did I do wrong? I believe it was the butter? Tips?
Hi Myrna,
We have never heard of that happening before, and we grill London broil often. In fact, we grilled one again at our family’s barbecue, earlier today.
The only thing we can think of – is that the grill could have been too high, which you can lower the heat if the fire is too intense. Or if the grill hasn’t been cleaned before you start to grill, and possibly there could be some grease build-up from previous cooking, that will cause a fire to occur.
My London broil is like 4 inches thick, how long should I cook it for med rare? It’s quite a large London broil.
Hi Barbara, that’s a good question. I think it’s best for you to check out our time and temperature chart for https://2sistersrecipes.com/how-to-grill-steak-perfectly/ and that will help you. ALso, it’s a good idea to invest in a meat thermometer ( https://amzn.to/3hQ6qO3 ) for larger steaks to grill them perfectly. We find we can’t mess up with a meat thermometer with the larger thicker steaks. I hope this helps!
What would you recommend for how to best deal with London broil that is only 1 inch thick? It was all the store had left
Hi Chuck, I hope this is not too late. But, I would recommend about 4 minutes per side – twice – for the 1-inch thick London Broil. The second time you turn them over, add the butter on top.
I followed this recipe exactly and OH SO AMAZING!!!!! Hubby and my son devoured it. From now on this is the only way I’ll cook london broil. No need to marinate it. It made me look like a real chef lol.
Hi Jennifer! So happy to hear you had a great outcome! Thanks so much and welcome to our blog, it’s so nice to meet you! Looking forward to you trying more of our recipes…. have a great night!
Xo Anna
In Step three it says to leave the lid open. Does that mean to leave it open for the remainder of the cooking?
Yes, cook the remainder with the lid open.
I marinated a steak my own way just now but I could never get the timing right . going to try 6 minutes on each side with a 1 1/2 inch steak thanks!
Sounds good Bobby! Let us know how it turns out for you. Keep in mind, outdoor grills vary in temperatures, and these are guidelines to assist with the cooking. Enjoy!

What temperature do you heat grill on? Low, medium or high?
Hi Donna! Your grill should be preheated on high heat, about 500F or above. And it should be extremely hot before you place the steak on it. Keep in mind, the printable recipe card is on the bottom of the post. I hope this helps!:)
Thank you Deborah!! So happy you had a great outcome! And, welcome to our blog!! It’s so nice to meet you!
