What is Happy Friendsgiving?

Friendsgiving is about having a Thanksgiving holiday dinner with friends who are the family you choose. Everyone is asked to bring something: a main, side dish, or dessert. The idea of Friendsgiving started in the early 2000s, and it was all about people who couldn’t travel back home to be with their family for Thanksgiving, or who simply preferred to spend it with friends. It became very popular in 2011, and the term made its way into the official Merriam-Webster dictionary in 2020.

A Few Quick Tips for Hosting a Friendsgiving:

  • It’s your party, so keep in mind, you and your friends make the rules.
  • It’s potluck-style, so encourage your guests to bring different dishes.
  • Friendsgiving is a fun twist on the traditional Thanksgiving, so try to keep the Thanksgiving theme with the food. Or, try something different.
  • Help your friends choose from classic to unexpected dishes to keep your gathering exciting.
  • Plan ahead, and keep track of who’s bringing what, so you don’t end up with the same dishes.
  • Also, ask your friends about food allergies.
